Draft Work, Practical Fun for You and Your Newf
By Cheryl Dondino

Pat Dowell And Chris Crockford handle their dogs, 'Herbie' and 'Ben', as Cheryl Dondino observes.      For several years, members of the Pacific Northwest Newfoundland Club have taught their Newfoundlands to pull carts and wagons. Our dogs earn certificates of accomplishment with two available titles awarded by the Newfoundland Club of America. These include the Draft Dog (DD) title for a single dog pulling a cart or wagon and the Team Draft Dog (TDD) awarded to two dogs pulling a cart/wagon together; the two dogs have each earned their single DD titles first.

In the spring of each year, the Pacific Northwest Newfoundland Club traditionally holds a draft test, which is open for all Newfoundlands who wish to test for their draft titles. Watch for the announcement of our next draft test in May of 2008 on our Events Calendar!

Our club members train informally together to teach the dogs carting and to keep them physically fit for the many volunteer carting opportunities we take part in during the winter and spring months. We use our carting dogs at area camps for disabled children and at local hospitals with benefits for children. If you are interested in joining us this coming winter/spring as we train together, please contact PNNC member Cheryl Dondino.cmd555@aol.com
